WORLD MARKET LEADER IN VEHICLE TESTING →→→ More and more countries around the world are recognizing the need for vehicle safety and emissions tests. Mexico and Chile, for example, are currently investing in building the necessary infrastructure. DEKRA is helping with its expertise as the world market leader and is thus expanding its activities in two additional countries in Latin America.

EMISSIONS TESTS

The state of Jalisco is located on the Pacific coast of Mexico. With 5 million inhabitants, the metropolitan area of Guadalajara is one of the most densely populated areas in Mexico – with the corresponding traffic and air pollution. However, the signs are pointing to improvements: In early 2021, DEKRA started vehicle emissions testing in Guadalajara. The first station opened in January, and five more are to follow by May, totaling 42 test lanes.

DEKRA’s success in the tender is down to its almost 100 years of experience and around 27 million vehicle inspections performed annually. It is also the result of close cooperation within the DEKRA organization. “The DEKRA Vehicle Inspection Service Division supported us very well, resulting in us obtaining the majority of the awarded concessions and building the first station in record time,” says Bert Zoetbrood, EVP and Head of DEKRA Region Americas. “It has been great to see colleagues from the Region, SD, and staff functions working together so closely and successfully.”

It was the experience and expertise of DEKRA that won over the Jalisco authorities, says the state’s Governor Enrique Alfaro Ramírez. He is certain about one thing: “With DEKRA, we have a strong partner at our side to improve air quality in our state.” The emission inspection stations are being set up in a way that would also allow for periodical vehicle safety inspections in the future.

Periodical technical inspection is becoming mandatory in more and more countries around the world as it makes an important contribution to improving road safety. Authorities in Chile have recognized this and have granted DEKRA several concessions. In the course of 2021, DEKRA will therefore begin vehicle inspections in the South American country. “In Chile, vehicle safety tests are carried out every year – at a level comparable to that in European countries,” explains Bert Zoetbrood.

OPENING

As the number of vehicles increases across the country, the Chilean authorities are expanding their vehicle monitoring capacities with tenders in various regions. DEKRA has received the first concessions for five test stations in the metropolitan region of the capital, Santiago de Chile, with 7 million inhabitants. “We look forward to making a contribution to road safety in Chile starting early March 2021, and in additional regions later this year. Our goal is to grow DEKRA into one of the leading vehicle inspection companies in Chile,” says Zoetbrood.
